The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah has successfully defended a Master's thesis entitled:

"Exploring Strategies to Reduce the Growth of Candida in the Gastrointestinal Tract of Cancer and Stroke Patients"

The thesis, presented by student Ali Abdul-Ridha Hussein, investigated the prevalence, distribution, and antifungal susceptibility patterns of Candida species in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and hospitalised stroke patients. The study encompassed a cohort of 258 patients.

The study aimed to detect and diagnose Candida infections in both patient groups, assess their susceptibility and resistance to antifungal agents, and develop an enhanced formulation of the most commonly used antifungal treatment — Nystatin — to limit and inhibit fungal growth in cancer and stroke patients. This was achieved by preparing a nano-formulation of Nystatin as a novel therapeutic approach.
