The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah discussed a Master's thesis titled "Design, Synthesis, and Characterization of Mutual Prodrug Derivatives as a Novel Targeting Model" presented by the student Murtadha Fahad Abdullah.
The thesis involved the synthesis of two series of fluoroquinolone derivatives loaded with urea and hydroxyurea. The synthesized compounds were characterized using advanced spectroscopic techniques including Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), and Mass Spectrometry (MS).
Furthermore, the biological activity of the synthesized compounds was evaluated against four distinct bacterial isolates: (S. aureus, S. mutans, P. aeruginosa, & P. mirabilis), alongside assessing their inhibition capability against the urease enzyme.
Results from molecular docking and computational design revealed good bioavailability. Compound (M4) demonstrated promising antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria with inhibition zones reaching up to 35mm, while compound (M6) exhibited the highest urease inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of 19.88 µg/mL.
The primary aim of the study is to develop promising drug derivatives acting as dual-targeting agents to enhance therapeutic efficacy.
