Basrah - College of Pharmacy Media:
The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah organized a seminar titled "Shiga-like Toxin 2: The Most Important Virulence Factor in Escherichia coli Serotype O157:H7," in a lecture presented by Dr. Iman Ali.
The seminar included an explanation of the extraction and purification of Shiga-like toxin 2 produced by Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli serotype (O157:H7), and the study of its histological effects on laboratory animals as a preliminary step for treating cases of bloody diarrhea using Antitoxins. It is not preferable to use antibiotics in treating cases of bloody diarrhea caused by Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, as they break down the bacterial cells and release the toxin into the bloodstream.
The seminar explained that this toxin is considered the primary cause of bloody diarrhea cases in children under the age of 5, the complications of which lead to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). The toxin in question causes damage to kidney cells, leading to kidney failure and eventually death.
